How old are YA bloggers? - I'll post the results in a few days!

Questions of the Week:

Blog Hop: What books would you like to see turned into a movie?

That's a hard one, because it's almost impossible to perfectly turn books into movies. The Harry Potter books are pretty close, but even they don't make it. I am a fan of the Twilight movies. They aren't nearly as good as the books - there's lots to complain about of the films - but I don't know how it really could have been done better. I think some books are just hard to translate onto screen no matter how good of a script, director, or actors you have.

That being said, here are a few books I'd like to see as movies, for better or worse:

1. Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
2. Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
3. Gallagher Girls by Ally Carter
4. White Cat by Holly Black

I could go on...

Follow Friday: If you are a fan of Science Fiction what is your favorite book? If you haven't read Science Fiction before...any inkling to? Anything catch your eye?

I have never been a science fiction fan, but I'd like to change that. Until a few years ago, I hated fantasy (thank you Harry Potter!) and paranormal romance (thank you Twilight!). I don't think one should necessarily discount any genre. One good book could get you hooked.

The only science fiction book that comes to mind that I enjoyed was Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card and the companion Bean books. I'd like to read Robert Heinlein at some point, but haven't. What books do you think could convert a sci-fi hater like me?

  7. You know, I had something against Paranormal Romance for a long time too - and I kept my fantasy love hidden :) I felt almost like they were genres to look down on, that they didn't have the same "merit" as fiction. I am so glad that I got over that, I mean now I run a speculative fiction blog lol. Yay for evolving! :)

  16. Did you read The Host by Stephenie Meyer? That book is a soft science fiction story. I really enjoyed that story because of Stephenie's ability to tell a fantastic story.

  21. I have to agree I didn't get hooked to Paranormal Romance until Twilight and am currently getting hooked on Urban Fantasy thanks to the current series i'm reading. Thanks for dropping by.

  22. Harry Potter changed my mind about fantasy too. Heinlein is a good place to start for sci-fi, but if you liked Ender's Game, you could try some more in that series too.

  23. I do agree with you that no one should discount a genre without giving it a try. I've read so many books I never thought I would read since I started my blog and I have loved them.

  25. Happy Friday, Alison! I'm actually beginning to really love sci-fi, and I think you just need to find that ONE book that turns you onto the genre, you know? I just read THE PACE by Shelena Shorts that's part fantasy, part sci-fi, and I loved it...the same goes for THE ADORATION OF JENNA FOX.

  27. I was going to say you could try reading the Host but someone already mentioned that. I agree with you: I'm sure I'd like Sci-Fi if I read some more of it. I'm not really good with genres: books are books, and what only matters to me is whether I like them or not.

Anyway, thanks for visiting and I'm now following,

  33. Following you back :).

Yes, I heard wonderful things about Across the Universe, so if you haven't tried that, I'd say that's a good bet.

I just finished Human.4 and found it to be an enjoyable read and worth the time, so you could try that one, too :).

  34. I 100% agree with what you said about not discounting a genre. Some genre's I never thought I'd be interested in have come out with some of my all-time favourite reads.

As you saw on my blog, my two fave sci-fi were Across The Universe and Academy 7. Both of which I think could convert you! *nudges toward them* :)

  35. I prefer watching a sci-fi movie than reading a book. Thanks to FF and you people, I have made a short list of sci-fi books now that I'd definitely read.

  42. Hi Alison,

Thanks for stopping by my blog and for following, I'm now following you too. A couple of books that I think might convert you to Sci-Fi would be The Host by Stephenie Meyer and the Dark Angel series by Max Allan Collins.

  45. Well you're already going to know my answer but Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi did a great job to convince me I should check out more SciFi and it restored my friend's faith in SciFi she was ready to give it up when she read it :). I keep hearing about Ender's Game so I'm going to have to add it to my TBR list.

    Thanks for visiting the blog!

  46. I'm going to throw in a vote for some other sci-fi books to try:

Maybe you'd like something with strong characters and good action, like:
The Warrior's Apprentice, Lois McMaster Bujold
    Trading in Danger, Elizabeth Moon

Or maybe something with complex relationships between humans and utterly alien races, like:
    Serpent's Reach by CJ Cherryh
    Dawn by Olivia Butler

    Happy Weekend!

  51. Hi Alison! Thanks for stopping by my blog:-)
I love Vampire Academy and that would definitly be my #1 pick.

I agree with you - never discount a genre. I had never read paranormal romanced, urban fantasy, etc..until someone suggested a Twilight and the Sookie Stackouse novels. Now I'm a paromantasy addict! I had all the sci-fi fans suggest their fave books and I added them to my TBP pile. I may just become a fan.

    Have a great weekend!

  54. Thanks for stopping by my blog :) The Mind Has No Sex? Women in the Origins of Modern Science by Londa Schiebinger is one of my favorites, a great story about the emergence of professional women in Europe. I'm from Louisiana, and I love reading about the history of New Orleans - the cultural history of the city is amazing! I found New Orleans as it Was by Henry C. Castellanos on a bargain bookshelf and absolutely fell in love with it. It's a collection of stories about personal experiences and inherited traditions during the Antebellum period. If you like American history, you will really enjoy this book. I'm a big fan of William Faulkner too - most of his stories are set in the south. As I Lay Dying by Faulkner is my all time favorite book. It's a difficult read, but it's absolutely amazing.

  55. I forgot about Vampire Academy. That could be a great movie.

I also am not a major Sci-Fi fan. I have tried, but just don't get into it as much.
